事の始まり

日本語勉強中のアメリカ人の同僚に聞かれた難しい質問。

What's the Moral of Urashima-Taro story? (浦島太郎の教訓って何？)

う・ら・し・ま・た・ろ・う！？　
なかなか難しい質問するわね、あなた・・・！

浦島太郎の話、よくよく考えてみれば、全くもって意味不明なエンディングだと思う。亀を助けたのにもかかわらず、最後には不幸なエンディングが待っている。
乙姫はなぜ、開けてはいけない箱をプレゼントとして渡したの？（自分の元を去る浦島太郎への罰？）

この話で伝えたかったことは、何だろう・・・？
とりあえず、約束を守らないといけないということが、この話から得られる教訓の一つではあるのはわかるのだけど、いまいち腑に落ちない。何か隠された意味がありそう・・・。いい話には、裏がある？とかそう言ったことなのか！？

うーん、全然わからないわん。
と、いうことでネットで色々探してみた。
色々な説があるようだ。

浦島太郎のストーリー要点まとめ（日本語/英語)

とりあえず、浦島太郎ってどんな話だっけ？と思ったあなたのために、日本語と英語で浦島太郎の話を、要点を押さえて短くまとめてみました。

Once upon a time, there lived a young fisherman named Urashima-Taro and his old mother.
むかしむかし、ある村に、浦島太郎(うらしまたろう)という若い男の漁師が母親と住んでいました。

One day, Urashima-Taro was fishing when he notices a group of children torturing a small turtle.
ある日、浦島太郎が漁をしているところに、子どもたちが小さな亀をいじめているのにでくわしました。

Urashima-Taro saved it and let it go back to the sea.
太郎は亀を救って海に帰してあげました。

The next day, a huge turtle approached him and told him that the small turtle he had saved was the princess of the sea named Otohime.
次の日、巨大な亀が彼に近づいてきて、浦島太郎の救った小亀は乙姫と言う名の姫であると言いました。

The turtle brought him to the bottom of the sea, to the Palace of the Dragon Palace (Ryūgū-jō).
亀は海底の竜神の城（竜宮城）に連れて行きました。

There he met the emperor and the small turtle, who was now a lovely princess, Otohime.
そこで彼は、皇帝と今では美しい姫になっている乙姫に会いました。

Urashima-Taro enjoyed himself very much in the Dragon Palace.
太郎は、姫と魚たちと竜宮城でとても楽しい日々を過ごしました。

He played with the princess and the fish, and had delicious dishes every day that he forget about going home.
毎日美味しい料理を食べて、家に帰ることを忘れていました。

However, on the third day, he suddenly thought of his old mother.
しかしながら太郎は、３日目に突然年老いた母のことを思い出しました。

He thought that his mother must have been very worried about him, and he became very homesick and he wanted to go home.
母は私のことを心配しているに違いないと思い、太郎は家に帰りたくなりました。

Although the princess asked him to stay for a few more days, but Urashima-Taro insisted on going home,
姫は太郎にもう数日いて欲しいと頼みましたが、太郎は家に帰ると強く言い張りました。

The princess wished him well and gave him a mysterious box called tamatebako(Jade Box) which she told him never to open.
姫は彼が無事を願い、また決して開けないように言って玉手箱という神秘の箱を渡しました。

Urashima-Taro carried the box carefully and sat on the turtle‘s back and went back home.
太郎は、その箱を大切に持って、亀の背中に乗って帰りました。

When he went home, everything had changed. His home was gone, his mother had vanished, and the people he knew were nowhere to be seen.
家に帰ると全てが変わっていました。彼の家はなく、母は消えており、知り合いもどこにもいませんでした。

So he went to the people in the neighborhood and asked about the house he used to live. 近所の人に、以前住んでいた家のことを尋ねてみました。

"Urashima-Taro? I‘ve heard that this person lived in this village 300 years ago, but he went out to the beach one day and never came back again."
「浦島太郎？たしか、浦島という人なら300年ほど前に、海へ出たきり帰らないそうですよ。」

He discovers that 300 years have passed since the day he left for the bottom of the sea.
彼が海底に行ったその日から、300年が経っていたことに気づきました。

Urashima-Taro felt so sad and lonely. He sadly went back to the beach and sat on the sand.
太郎はとても寂しくなって、浜辺に戻り、砂浜にすわりこんでしまいました。

He forgot all about what the princess told him, which is not to open the box no matter what happens, and he wanted to open the box.
太郎はさびしくなって、とうとう、開けてはいけない玉手箱を開けてしまいました。

Just at that moment......White smoke came out from the box.
すると中から、まっ白の煙が出てきました。

Urashima-Taro, who saw the white smoke, suddenly became a gray-haired, wrinkle-faced and hunchbacked old man.
煙をあびた浦島太郎は、髪の毛がまっ白でシワだらけの、背中のまるまったおじいさんになってしまいました。

浦島太郎の話から学ぶ教訓とは？

質問をしてくれた同僚に説明してあげようと思って、英語で教訓も作ってみました。もし私と同じように、外国人の友達から質問を受けたら、こちらの説明してあげて下さい（笑）

教訓1:

約束は守らないといけない。

浦島太郎は約束を守らなかったために、最後に年老いてしまった。
We should keep our promises which Urashima-Taro did not do, so he ended up being an old man.

教訓2:

人は一度自分の居場所（快適ゾーン）から出て行って、戻った時、物事は以前と同じ状態ではない。

After you have left your place of dwelling or comfort zone, things will not be the same again when you return.

教訓3:

時間は人を待ってくれないので、長い間、目の前の楽しさに溺れるべきではない。

We should not indulge in pleasure for long as time does not wait for you.

教訓4:

誰かを助けることは、必ずしもいいことをもたらすとは限らない。

現実世界では、良い行いをすることは、必ずしも良い見返りをもらえるとは限らない。
また逆に、悪いことをすると、必ずしも罰を受けたり、不運なことが起こるとは限らない。また一方で、何か良い行いをしたら、何か良い見返りをもらえることを期待するのではなく、謙虚になって、贈り物などは断った方がいいのかもしれない。
Helping others does not necessarily bring you good.
Because in reality, doing good does not always result in good rewards and conversely, committing evil deeds does not mean that one will get punishment or bad luck for it.
When one commits a good deed, one should not expect a good reward, and should be humble enough to reject it when one is offered a gift.

うーん、これは、子供が理解するのはかなり難しいのでは？
大人になった今だから理解できることなのかもしれない。
